How Handmade Carpets Are Made in India

Step behind the looms in Gopiganj and Bhadohi to discover the 11 meticulous steps required to transform raw natural wool and silk into museum-grade floor art.

01
Step 01 of 11

Design Concept & Scaled Graphing (Naksha)

Every masterpiece begins on paper. Master carpet artists draft scaled graphs where every square represents a single hand-tied knot and its exact hue. For traditional classical designs, this is translated into a Talim coded script.

02
Step 02 of 11

Yarn Selection & Spinning

We source premium long-staple New Zealand virgin wool, hand-spun Indian highland wool, and 100% pure Mulberry silk. Hand-spinning ensures the yarn maintains tensile strength and natural elasticity.

03
Step 03 of 11

Artisanal Dyeing & Sun Curing

Yarn hanks are hand-dyed in small batches in open vats using colorfast, eco-friendly Swiss dyes or natural organic pigments (madder root, walnut bark, indigo). The yarn is dried under the natural Indian sun.

04
Step 04 of 11

Vertical Loom Warping & Setup

Cotton or silk warp threads are tensioned with mathematical precision across heavy upright looms. Proper warp tension is critical to ensure the finished rug remains perfectly flat and dimensionally square.

05
Step 05 of 11

Master Hand-Knotting / Hand-Tufting

Artisans sit side by side tying individual knots row by row (or tufting dense loops). A heavy iron comb (panja) is used to hammer down the weft threads after every row, locking the knots firmly into the foundation.

06
Step 06 of 11

Herbal Washing (Dhulai)

Once taken down from the loom, the rug undergoes a multi-stage herbal wash with clean spring water and natural conditioning agents to remove loose fiber dust and impart a rich, lustrous patina.

07
Step 07 of 11

Courtyard Sun-Drying & Blocking

The washed carpet is mounted on heavy stretching frames in open sun-lit courtyards to dry evenly. This blocking process ensures straight edges, perfect rectangular alignment, and structural stability.

08
Step 08 of 11

Precision Shearing (Qainchi)

Master shearers trim the pile with specialized curved shears to achieve an even, velvet-smooth pile height across the entire carpet surface.

09
Step 09 of 11

Hand-Embossing & Carving

Using fine hand-held carving blades, artisans bevel the contour boundaries between different colors and patterns, creating high-definition three-dimensional sculptural relief.

10
Step 10 of 11

40-Point Quality Inspection

Every finished piece is thoroughly audited for knot count consistency, dimensional accuracy, colorfastness, fringe edge binding (chirra), and surface perfection.

Export Roll Packaging & Dispatch

The carpet is vacuumed, rolled around a reinforced core, wrapped in waterproof poly film, and sealed in multi-layer export burlap for international air freight delivery.
